25 students are named Nene Award winners

More than two dozen isle schoolchildren were among the winners of the 2008 Nene Awards for children's literature.
The ceremony on the Battleship Missouri Memorial on Friday included naming the winners of the Nene Awards essay, poster, digital arts and performing arts contests. The entries were inspired by last year's Nene Award, "A Boy at War: A Novel of Pearl Harbor," by Harry Mazer. The winners were:

This year's top Nene Award, chosen by Hawaii students in grades four through six, was the book "The Lightning Thief," by Rick Riordan. Tony DiTerlizzi's "The Field Guide: Spiderwick Chronicles, Book 1" was named runner-up in the voting and will receive the 2008 Nene Honor Book Award.
