HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS
Punahou rules again in tennis
The dynasty continues.
Punahou won the girls singles title and swept the boys and girls doubles titles yesterday to earn both team championships at the Carlsmith Ball/Hawaii High School Athletic Association state tennis championships at the Holua Tennis Center in Keauhou-Kona.
It was the 18th consecutive title for the Buffanblu boys, 40th overall, dating back the inaugural tournament in 1958. Punahou, coached by Rusty Komori, finished with 23 points with Pearl City second (11) and Iolani and St. Joseph tied for third (eight).
The Buffanblu girls also continued their reign, winning their sixth straight and 34th overall dating back to 1959. Punahou, coached by Bernard Gusman, had 28 points with Mililani a distant second (nine) and Kealakehe, Lahainaluna and Sacred Hearts tied for third (six).
Punahou's Kristin Lim, the top seed, successfully defending her singles title, defeating No. 2 seed Jackie Owens of Lahainaluna 6-2, 6-0.
No. 2 seed Fernando Aguirre Gomez Corta of St. Joseph prevented a Buffanblu sweep when rallying past fifth-seeded Doug Ho of Punahou, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Punahou's top-seeded duo of Ashley Ohira and Ashley Nakaoka stopped second-seeded Kelsey Daguio and Kelly Domingo of Sacred Hearts 7-5, 6-3. It was the third doubles title in a row for Ohira, all coming with different partners.
Third seeds Shaun Chow and Brett Katayama gave the Buffanblu their sixth straight doubles crown when topping Pearl City's Jordan Lum and Taylor Pacarro 6-4, 7-5. Defending champions and top seeds Alex Ching and Erik Shoji finished third with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Iolani's Devin Anderson and Marco Kobayashi.
