Highlights abound in high school playoffs

By Star-Bulletin Staff

The state prep postseason scene offered plenty of highlights yesterday in a variety of sports across the island chain.

Three of the top four seeds -- Punahou, Kahuku and Lahainaluna -- advanced in the Hawaii High School Athletic Association state water polo tournament, with three seed Kamehameha-Hawaii losing to Kamehameha.

The Division I state baseball tournament also saw the No. 3 seed go down, as Saint Louis blanked Waiakea 5-0 to knock the Big Island school out of the winners bracket. Roosevelt almost stunned top seed Punahou, but the Buffanblu rallied for a 9-8 victory in a wild one at Les Murakami Stadium.

Two of the top four seeds advanced in the Division II state baseball tournament at Central Oahu Regional Park. No. 1 Kauai and second seed St. Anthony moved on easily, but Kalaheo knocked off No. 3 seed Waipahu and Molokai eliminated No. 4 Honokaa.

The state tennis tournament on the Big Island moved through the second round with the top seeds in the boys and girls having few problems in singles and doubles.

In the boys singles, No. 1 seed Matthew Westmoreland of Island Pacific Academy won in straight sets, as did second seed Fernando Aguirregomezcorta of St. Joseph. The top doubles tandem of Alex Ching and Erik Shoji of Punahou moved on easily as did the second-seeded team of Devin Anderson and Marco Kobayashi of Iolani.

The girls top two seeds also advanced, as No. 1 Kristin Lim of Punahou won in straight sets as did second seed Jackie Owens of Lahainaluna. The top two doubles teams also moved on as No. 1 Ashley Ohira and Ashley Nakaoka of Punahou and No. 2 Kelsey Daguio and Kelly Domingo of Sacred Hearts won in straight sets.
