Honors for Wahine basketball team

Seniors Tanya Smith and Saundra Cariaga took home team awards for the Hawaii women's basketball team at the Willows Restaurant yesterday.

Smith, who averaged a double-double with 12 points and 11.8 rebounds per game, received the 2007-08 offensive player of the year and the Ah Chew Goo award for overall outstanding performance.

Cariaga notched defensive player of the year honors while being the team's second-leading scorer at 11 points per game.

The Rainbow Wahine went 12-18 this season in Jim Bolla's fourth year.

Rachel Domingo and Chaney Lopez will join the Hawaii soccer team next season after both signed national letters of intent, coach Pinsoom Tenzing announced yesterday.

Domingo and Lopez are the final signees of this year's five-player recruiting class. Domingo, a four-year starter for Roosevelt High, is a three-time All-OIA selection. She's the younger sister of former UH midfielder and captain Jessica Domingo.

Lopez, a Kapolei High defender, is a former member of the Olympic Development Program Region IV team. She was a also a first-team all-state player twice.

HPU takes NCAA II tennis opener

Hawaii Pacific shut out Grand Canyon 5-0 at Central Oahu Regional Park on the opening day of the NCAA Division II West Regional tennis tournament yesterday at Central Oahu Regional Park.

HPU improved to 20-7 and advanced to today's second round against Hawaii-Hilo.

The Lady Sea Warriors claimed all three doubles matches with ease. Lauren Shin and Ingrid Cseh defeated Stephanie Griffin and Marie-Carol Legros 8-4, and Anastasia Ageychik and Nina Mihova shut out Sheila Johnson and Stephanie Halderman 8-0.

HPU's Tinka Mihova and Elena Hudzikova came up with an 8-1 win over Emily Rios and Amanda Jackson.

Mihova and Ralitsa Pirdopska were the Lady Sea Warriors' singles winners.

» In another West Regional match, Hawaii-Hilo beat Cal State Los Angeles 6-2 yesterday.

The Vulcans captured two doubles points and four singles matches in the win.

In singles, Christie Pagatpatan defeated Krishana DeSilva 6-2, 6-3, Nicole Campbell topped Bojana Ducanovic 6-0, 6-1, Susan Souksavath beat Linda Majzlikova and Carolina Ardila Cuervo defeated Jennifer Avila 6-4, 6-0.

Vulcans' Brown is player of the week

Hawaii-Hilo junior left fielder Thomas Brown was named as the PacWest Conference baseball player of the week yesterday.

Brown went 7-for-13 with three runs scored and eight RBIs.

Hogue to host new radio show on KUMU

PacWest Conference commissioner Bob Hogue will host a new radio show on KUMU 1500-AM.

"PacWest Magazine, the Radio Show" will be prerecorded and air on Mondays from 7-8 p.m. starting next week.
