Spend evening with photographer Peter Lik

Award-winning international photographer Peter Lik will present his work and discuss his craft on May 18 in a Halekulani Living presentation.

Lik, who hails from Australia, is renowned for his panoramic landscape shots, which capture the beauty and drama of such places as the Australian rain forest and the Southwestern American desert. Lik has also published various coffee-table books, including "Hawaii, the Aloha Spirit." Peter Lik Gallery on Waikiki Beach Walk is among the galleries the photographer has opened across the globe.

The Halekulani event, 5 to 7 p.m. at the Hau Terrace, will feature Halekulani delicacies and Australian wines in honor of Lik. Cost is $55. Call 931-5005. Attendees are invited to visit Lik's gallery afterward, where he will offer private viewings.

Halekulani Living is a series in which leading artists and authors share their experience with guests in an intimate setting.

Rose show to feature vote on fragrant rose

Treat Mom to a rose bouquet made just for her at the Mother's Day rose show and sale at Ward Warehouse tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Locally grown roses will be on display, and those taking in the show will have a chance to vote for the most fragrant rose.

Mililani orchid show shares collections

Just in time for Mother's Day, the Mililani Orchid Club will present its free Mother's Day orchid show and sale tomorrow. Prized collections of orchids will be on display in all forms, from corsages and baskets to floral arrangements and plants.

Hours are from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mililani Uka Elementary School, 94-380 Kuahelani Ave.

Thomas Square Park to host plant sale

The Oahu Nursery Growers Association is having a plant sale May 17 and 18 at Thomas Square Park to benefit the Waimea Arboretum Foundation.

The sale will feature bromeliads, mini iris heliconias, gingers, bamboo, orchids, hibiscus and anthuriums among other varieties.

New plant introductions include Rosella Herbal Shrubs and Ficus High Noon.

Vermicomposting worms are your friends.

Organic fertilizer workshop planned

Get the dirt on organic fertilizer when the Board of Water Supply and the Waikiki Worm Co. host a workshop on vermicomposting -- using worms to turn food waste into organic fertilizer.

The class will be held from 10 a.m. to noon May 24 at the Halawa Xeriscape Garden, 99-1268 Iwaena St.

Appropriate for ages 7 and up, participants will build a minibin, discuss care and feeding of the worms, harvesting techniques and population dynamics.

The workshop includes a free tour of the gardens geared for water conservation.

Participants are invited to bring a brown-bag lunch and picnic at the gardens after the workshop.

Cost is $30 ($20 for members of the Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden) and includes the minibin, starter materials and manual. Friends or family members are welcome to keep you company for a $10 fee.
