The Building Industry Association of Hawaii crowned new royalty last night at the 23rd Annual BIA Renaissance Building and Remodeling Awards.

In the Monarch Room at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, companies were honored for excellence in design and construction.

The winner of the Carl Reppun Award, presented to a small-size contracting company for residential work, was awarded to a "Hawaii Built Green" category entry by O'Donnell Construction LLC and Green by D'Bodinus.

Entrants created a two-story addition to a 2,700 square-foot Kahaluu home, using sustainable materials and energy-saving appliances throughout.

The remodeling of this Kahaluu residence won the Carl Reppun Award and was a "Hawaii Built Green" entry.

Four Overall Grand Awards were presented for commercial and residential projects.

WATG won in the new commercial division, for the expansion and renovation of the Anara Spa at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa.

Natural materials, such as Ohia for columns, and design elements crafted by local artisans were built into the treatment hales to make the project unique to Kauai's Hyatt.

A Kailua home by Brooks & Brooks Inc. and Dan O'Sullivan Construction Inc. won the Overall Grand Award for new residential construction.

The H-shaped house has covered lanais on both sides and is set back from the beach to protect it from the elements, but to also provide a huge lawn.

WATG won a BIA-Hawaii Overall Grand Award for its expansion and remodeling of the Anara Spa at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa in Poipu.

Peter Vincent Architects Inc. entered its work on the Kapolei Golf Course Clubhouse and won the Overall Grand Award in the commercial remodeling projects from 7,501-to-15,000 square feet category.

One highlight of the redesign was that solid walls were replaced with glass walls to provide views of the greens from interior dining areas.

Ohia Construction won the residential remodeling award for its work on a neglected, mid-century-built house in metro Honolulu that other companies said should be bulldozed.

The hillside house was completely reconfigured. The finished project includes sustainable and energy-efficient materials and a private, outdoor shower flanked by a lava rock wall.
