HUGS dinner caps anniversary events

The family support group HUGS ends its yearlong silver-anniversary celebration with a benefit dinner May 17 at the Royal Hawaiian.

Since 1982, HUGS -- Help, Understanding, Group Support -- has helped more than 9,000 families with emergency airfare, peer support, respite care and hospital outreach programs.

The group's goal is to keep families together when a child is faced with life-threatening illness. More than 700 parents and children statewide are served by a dozen free HUGS programs, the group says.

The fundraising event will recognize the group's many supporters and volunteers. Island Insurance Co. will be given HUGS' Corporate Award, and three student volunteers will receive Super Teen awards.

Entertainment will include Broadway vignettes by Kristian Lei. A live auction will feature items including a trip via private plane for six to any neighbor island.

Tickets are $150, with tables for 10 available for $2,000 to $10,000. Call 732-4846 or visit www.hugslove.org.
