Health group logs 50th anniversary

The Hawaii Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance is celebrating its 50th anniversary supporting healthy and active lifestyles.

The group, which became a member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance in the 1957-58 school year, will commemorate its anniversary next Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Case Middle School's pavilion at Punahou School.

All members are invited to attend and hear guest speaker Kaiulani Odom, a registered dietician from Kamehameha Schools, speak on "Eating Now & Then: Going Back to Eating Healthy." The event also will highlight teachers of the year, scholarship winners and other professionals.

Student volunteers can apply at Queen's

The Queen's Medical Center is accepting applications for its 2008 summer volunteer program for high school and college students.

The program is for students 15 years and older and provides an opportunity for students interested in health care and non-health-care careers to work in one of more than 50 areas of the hospital.

Volunteers can choose from one or two sessions: May 28-July 15 or June 16-Aug. 3.

For more information and an application call Ashley at 547-4397 or acisek@queens.org.

Weight loss camp will begin June 22

Wellspring Hawaii, a summer weight loss camp, will begin its first session June 22 on Mauna Kea for youths 13 to 18 years old.

The program helps campers learn to live a healthier lifestyle and lose weight while snorkeling, surfing and sea kayaking.

The scientifically based program combines diet management with physical activity and cognitive behavioral therapy.
