Hilo fifth-grader places third in nation
Joseph C. Bayola of St. Joseph Elementary School in Hilo placed third in the Grade 5 division of the 2008 U.S. "Try Prayer! It Works!" contest. His work was selected by Family Rosary of Holy Cross Family Ministries from more than 3,000 entries in the 13th annual national contest.
Marc Marquez, a graphic design major and a computer clerical specialist at the University of Hawaii-Manoa, was the overall winner of the 23rd Annual Student Employee of the Year Awards.
He works at the Curriculum Research & Development Group in the College of Education. Marquez received $750 for the SEOTY award, $100 for the regional award, sponsored by the Western Association of Student Employment Administrators, and $50 as the overall state winner.
David Carbone, an art major and a student assistant in the Department of Art and Art History, received $500 as the category winner.
The two finalists receiving $250 scholarships were Ruby Ng, a psychology major and a clerical specialist in the Institute for Higher Education in the College of Education, and Monica Tan, an interdisciplinary studies student, and assistant in the Department of Human Nutrition, Food and Animal Science.
