Volunteer Chuck Rogers gave Edene Nagai a hand getting atop a pile of donated shoes yesterday at Niketown in Waikiki. The annual event coincides with Earth Month and is part of Nike's "Reuse a Shoe" program, which recycles old shoes into sport surface and equipment for kids. The event also featured a recycled shoe art competition, a school recycling drive contest, prize giveaways, vending and informational booths, and an appearance by Mayor Mufi Hannemann. Also pictured on top of the mountain of shoes is volunteer Joe Bautista. A total of 27,030 pairs of shoes was donated during the drive.

Six-year-old Trevor Komeiji, left, and his sister Kiana, 4, crafted daruma out of construction paper and yarn with the help of their father, Paul, yesterday during the Kodomo no Hi Keiki Fun Fest at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii in Moiliili. The festival commemorated the modern Japanese holiday Kodomo no Hi, or Children's Day, and included games, kimono dressing, cultural make-and-take activities, children's entertainment and a variety of foods.

Maung Kyan, who was born and raised in Burma, held the flag of Tibet yesterday during a peace vigil for Tibet and Burma held at sunset at Magic Island. The gathering was co-organized by the Buddhist Peace Fellowship, Interfaith Alliance Hawaii and Hawaii Campaign for Burma.
