Auction expands Oahu's airwaves
Eight Hawaii FM radio station construction permits, or CPs, were among the 290 auctioned by the Federal Communications Commission in 2004. Gross winning bids by 110 bidders garnered $178,001,500 for the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Upon grant of a construction permit, the FCC allows broadcasters three years to construct the stations, obtain licenses for them and get them on the air. One bidder failed in her quest while three others successfully met their deadlines but their stations are currently silent.
