Jo-Ann Kamuela Kahanamoku, left, shared a laugh with Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona and Dick Moon during an award ceremony held in her honor Thursday at Duke's Waikiki. Kahanamoku, niece of surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku, received the Duke's Waikiki 2008 Ho'okahiko Award for her contributions in perpetuating Hawaiian culture through her feather lei and cap craftsmanship.

Students from Honolulu Community College's Tech 1 Program helped build a gazebo yesterday at the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources' Urban Garden Center at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Assisting were, from foreground, Mauric Agustin, Collin Matsumoto, Brent Kozai and the teacher, Jeff Uyeda. The project is part of the students' service learning project, where they apply classroom work to real-world situations.
