Rainbows let sweep get away, settle for split with Pack
The Hawaii baseball team let a golden opportunity to clinch this weekend's series against the Wolf Pack fall by the wayside.
Nevada scored two runs in the top of the eighth to turn a one-run deficit into a one-run lead and reliever Mario Rivera retired the final six batters in order as the Wolf Pack battled back to earn a split of yesterday's doubleheader with a 4-3 victory in the nightcap in front of a Les Murakami Stadium crowd of 1,519.
Brandon Haislet went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs, and Greg Garcia had three hits and scored two runs as Hawaii needed just seven innings to win the first game 13-3 due to the 10-run mercy rule.
The Rainbows (18-22, 10-9 WAC) had a chance to pass Nevada (22-16, 9-6) for third place in the conference, but couldn't capitalize on chances to put the Wolf Pack away in Game 2.
Nevada stayed within a run of the 'Bows until Jason Rodriguez tied the game with an RBI double in the eighth inning. The Wolf Pack had runners on the corners when Terry Walsh hit a chopper to first baseman Kevin Macdonald. Macdonald tried to throw out Rodriguez at home plate, but the ball bounced past catcher Kevin Fujii to the backstop, allowing the Wolf Pack to take the lead.
"We took for granted once we got the lead that things would go our way because things have been going our way," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. "But that's not how you beat a team like Nevada. You've got to play all nine innings."
The Rainbows trailed 2-1 in the fifth when Haislet doubled with one out and Fujii on first. Fujii got caught in a rundown between third and home, but consecutive bad throws by the third baseman and the catcher allowed Fujii to score and Haislet to reach third. Jon Hee then laced a two-out single up the middle to score Haislet and give the Rainbows a 3-2 lead.
Rainbows starters Alex Bates allowed two runs in four innings while striking out five. Cory Kahn pitched three shutout innings in relief before issuing a one-out walk to Matt Bowman that set up Rodriguez's game-tying double.
"That was a stupid move on my part," Trapasso said. "I had everything planned in my mind to where if we could get Cory to get us to the eighth I'd start (Jayson) Kramer. Kramer does much better when he starts an inning. That was a stupid decision on my part to leave Cory in because he was throwing well."
It was the only hit Kahn gave up in 3 1/3 innings. He took the loss to fall to 2-1 for the season.
Wolf Pack starter Kyle Howe only lasted two innings in the first game after struggling with his command. He walked two in the first and gave up a single to Haislet to load the bases with one out. He got out of the inning with back-to-back strikeouts, but couldn't pitch his way out of another jam in the second.
Landon Hernandez took the 11th pitch of his at-bat down the left-field line for a double to score Garcia for a 1-0 lead. Howe walked two more batters to load the bases and, this time, the Rainbows made him pay, as Haislet hit a bases-clearing double to right to give Hawaii a 4-0 advantage.
"We came out and were able to get runners on, take advantage of the walk situation, and get runners around the bases," Haislet said.
Hawaii will try to win its third consecutive series with a win in today's finale at 1:05 p.m.
