Summer swim lessons set for Ala Moana beach

Star-Bulletin staff

The American Red Cross' free annual Summer Swim 2008 at Ala Moana Beach Park starts several weeks of instruction for keiki and adults in early June. Register early, as space is limited.

The Red Cross is also looking for teens and adult volunteers to help with this program.

Classes will meet on the Magic Island side of the park near the showers and lifeguard station 1-E.

Adults (ages 14 and over) will meet from 5:15 to 6 p.m. three times a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The five-week session begins June 3 and ends July 2.

Children (4 to 14) will meet only on Saturdays from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. The six-week session starts June 7 and ends July 26 (with no class July 5).

The program is sponsored by Jamba Juice and Hawaiian Airlines.

Register online at www.hawaiiredcross.org. Registration forms can be found at all Jamba Juice stores across Oahu, and mailed or faxed.

Adults interested in volunteering may call Ingrid Johnson at 739-8179 and leave a message, or e-mail johnsoni@hawaiiredcross.org.

Teens (14 to 18) who want to become Summer Buddies, improve their leadership and aquatic skills, and get certified in lifesaving cardiopulmonary resuscitation should sign up on the Web site or call 739-8179.

More information on staying safe in and around the water is also available on the Red Cross Web site or by calling 739-8131.
