Basketball signing period begins
The remaining holes in the Hawaii basketball teams' rosters can start to be officially filled with the opening of the signing period today.
The signing period runs through May 21 with the Rainbow Warriors working to fill the holes left by the departures of seven seniors, including their top four scorers.
Signed letters of intent are expected to arrive from Pensacola (Fla.) Junior College teammates Petras Balocka and Lasha Parghalava. Balocka, a 6-foot-8 forward, averaged 13.7 points and 11.2 rebounds last season. Parghalava, a 6-2 shooting guard, averaged 11.4 points for the Pirates.
UH signed forward Adam Jespersen and guard Hiram Thompson during the early signing period in the fall.
Wie invited to LPGA event
Honolulu's Michelle Wie has accepted an exemption to play July 17-20 at the LPGA State Farm Rail Classic in Springfield, Ill.
The Punahou School graduate, currently a freshman at Stanford, previously accepted an invitation to play the preceding week at the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic in Sylvania, Ohio.
Warriors top Sea Warriors in tennis
Hawaii handed Hawaii Pacific its first men's tennis loss of the season, 6-1 yesterday at the UH Tennis Complex.
It was the third consecutive win for the Warriors (5-1), who head for Las Cruces, N.M., and the Western Athletic Conference Championship, April 24-27.
HPU (17-1), ranked No. 10 in Division II, picked up its only win when Nikola Petrov defeated Craig Faulk 6-2, 6-0 in No. 4 singles.
» Led by sophomore Sophie Kobuch, the Hawaii women's tennis team held on to defeat Eastern Washington 4-3 in Cheney, Wash.
Kobuch teamed with senior Chloe Bihag to win at No. 1 doubles. Kobuch, ranked No. 82 nationally in singles, then won her match over Kasey Knox 6-1, 6-1.
Hawaii (3-16) concludes its four-match road trip today at Idaho.
Wahine basketball banquet set
The banquet for the Hawaii women's basketball team is scheduled for April 23 at the Willows Restaurant.
Tickets are $50. The event runs from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Musquiz earns pitcher of week honors
Sophomore Sherise Musquiz earned conference pitcher of the week honors for the second consecutive week yesterday.
Musquiz (15-3) went 2-0 last week, giving up four hits in shutting out Chaminade twice.
With Sunday's wins over the Silverswords, the Sea Warriors (34-5, 19-1) clinched their second straight conference title. HPU is at Hawaii-Hilo (9-9, 8-8) for doubleheaders today and tomorrow.
Hawaii-Hilo golfers tie for 11th
The Hawaii-Hilo men's golf team finished tied for 11th place with Barton College as the 35th Buzzini-Stanislaus Invitational concluded yesterday at Turlock, Calif.
Leading the Vulcans was Ari Bishara, who tied for 39th at 10-over 226, 18 strokes behind medalist Jarin Todd of Sonoma State.
UHH finished with an aggregate 907. Sonoma State won the 16-team event at 872.
