No. 9 Mules making run in Red West
With one clutch swing of the bat, the Leilehua Mules are now hot on the trail of the Mililani Trojans.
Third baseman Kristen Campogan's three-run home run in the top of the third inning lifted No. 9 Leilehua to a 4-1 win over fourth-ranked Kapolei on an overcast, breezy afternoon at Kaala Elementary School.
Leilehua improved to 7-2 in Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West play, just one loss behind front-running Mililani (7-1). Kapolei slipped to 6-3, falling behind Leilehua and Campbell (6-2).
It was the second clutch hit by Campogan in as many games. Her bases-loaded triple broke a scoreless tie at Waipahu on Wednesday.
Despite three errors, sophomore ace Kaylen Ynigues survived. The right-hander allowed one earned run on five hits, including a solo homer by Cherece Beyer in the fourth, struck out five and walked only one for the complete-game win.
"This was a team win," Mules coach Stacy Araki said, noting defensive gems by left fielder Alex Smith and right fielder Ashley McKeown.
Kapolei had runners at third base in the first and sixth innings, only to come up empty. Ynigues outlasted Kapolei sophomore Kahana Higa, who allowed just six hits and threw only 60 pitches in six innings.
"Kahana's doing a great job. I'm happy with what I see," Kapolei coach Tony Saffrey said. "(Ynigues) kept us off balance with that curve to the outside. She made us chase it."
Ynigues' older sister, Alyssa, played for Kapolei before graduating last year.
"I was surprised they were chasing (pitches). I know them, and I was scared when they came up to bat," Ynigues said, referring to leadoff hitter Tehani Ka'aihue, Kai Clark and all-state slugger Ka'ili Smith.
Those three batters were a collective 0-for-10 against Ynigues, who lost at Kapolei one month ago.
"She's been hitting her spots," said Araki, who calls the pitches most of the time. "On two strikes, a couple of times, I let her call her own. (Earlier), she said, 'Coach, I hate when they come up 'cause when I go inside, they smash it.'"
Instead, Ynigues had command of her risers and breaking balls, and painted the corners with her fastball.
Leilehua broke the scoreless battle in the third when Camey Narusawa singled and came home on a single by Ciara Paracuelles. With two runners on base, Campogan then blasted a high, deep ball to left, where outfielder Dorian Acierto misread the ball's flight.
"I thought she was gonna catch it," said Campogan, who raced around the bases as the ball bounced through a fenceless outfield. Leilehua had a 4-0 lead with that play.
"The wind carries (from home plate) toward the school, but our freshman missed that one," Saffrey said.
Beyer answered with a first-pitch shot to the right-center gap for a homer in the top of the fourth, but the 'Canes couldn't get a much of a read on Ynigues until the seventh.
In the seventh, pinch hitter Nicole Kamei singled and Higa re-entered the game to run for Kamei. However, she later misread signals from Saffrey, who was in the third-base box, and was thrown out at third on a botched double steal.
"I read the signals wrong," Higa said. "It sucks."
Acierto, who had singled, eventually came home on an error by Leilehua shortstop Julie Brister, but the threat ended when Smith flew out to left for the final out.
Higa, one of three starting freshmen, remained optimistic.
"I could've done better, but my defense played good. Now we move on. It's in the past already," she said. "We learn from our mistakes and get better."
