Chargers stop Na Alii
Pearl City had to work a little bit harder than expected to take the top West seed in the upcoming Oahu Interscholastic Association tournament.
Though the third-ranked Chargers led by nine after just four innings of play, Aiea proved its mettle late in yesterday's contest at Aiea Recreational Center. Na Alii stared at double-digit deficits in the bottom of both the fifth and sixth innings that would have ended the game early under the 10-run mercy rule, but responded with clutch play in the bottom of both frames to extend play the full seven innings before falling 13-4.
Pearl City coach Gary Nakamoto could only shake his head after his team swept the season series from Na Alii.
"You cannot lay down for Aiea, man. They always have big bats and come back," Nakamoto said. "They never give up, so even when we was up that much runs we knew they could score. Nothing is big enough for them."
Winning pitcher Bryson Nakamura was effective in going the distance despite striking out just two and giving up 10 hits. He mixed up his pitches effectively in getting Aiea to ground and pop out regularly.
Aiea had its ace, Randy Castillo, starting on the mound for the first time this month. Castillo had been ill and pitched briefly on Tuesday, and told his coach he felt fine yesterday.
But he struggled early in loading the bases in the first, second and fourth innings, and walked home the Chargers' first two runs.
Improved plate discipline was all part of the strategy for Pearl City, which drew 11 walks, and Castillo was lifted in the fourth.
"I think we followed our game plan, try to control as much pitches as we could," said Nakamura, who had lost count early of his team's walk total. "We just made sure that when we went up to bat, we didn't help them by not swinging at balls, just swinging at strikes."
Bryson Namba drove in four runs in capitalizing on two at-bats with the bases loaded, and the top two batters in Pearl City's order, Duane Kiyota and Kurt Poentis, scored three runs apiece.
While Aiea fell to 6-4 in the OIA West in a battle with Campbell for the No. 2 seed (and first-round tournament bye), coach Ryan Kato and his team learned something important late in the game.
"I told (my players), I think the push they made at the end of the game really reaffirmed my belief in the team," Kato said. "I think they acknowledged the fact Pearl City hit the ball and went right at people, so you really can't do anything about that. Pearl City came to play.
He pointed as his team gathered on the field.
"They're pretty upbeat, so they know we can play with them," Kato added.
Pearl City posted leads of 11-0 in the fifth inning and 13-2 in the sixth, when Terry Ryan homered to right. But Aiea didn't lay down -- Travis Nishida smacked an RBI ground-rule double to center field in the bottom of the inning and catcher Carson Tsuruda sent home Kanekoa Asing on a sacrifice fly to extend the game its full length.

No. 5 Kailua 7, Kalani 0
The fifth-ranked Surfriders parlayed aggressive small ball into a five-run fifth inning to win their last home game of the season.
Two hit batsmen, two steals and a Kalani passed ball set the stage for Kailua's Scotty Talaesea, who singled in Ryan Kinoshita. Talaesea came around to score on Keenan Tanaka's sacrifice fly to right field. Rob DeMarsh and Jordan Limahai then both scored after Bobby Lastimosa was thrown out trying to stretch a single.
