From staff and wire reports
SAN JOSE, Calif. » San Jose State's answer to Hawaii's suddenly ferocious offensive attack was a right-hander making his first start of the season.
Ryan Shopshire pitched a four-hit shutout and struck out 10 as the Spartans won the second game of yesterday's doubleheader 4-0 at Municipal Stadium.
Hawaii pounded out 18 hits -- its sixth straight game with at least 10 -- to take the opener 12-5, but was silenced in the nightcap by Shopshire, who faced five batters over the minimum and only allowed one runner past second base.
"I've got to give (Shopshire) credit," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. "We played great offensively in the first game and did a good job of battling in the second game, but he just pitched a good game."
Shopshire improved to 5-0 in his first start after making nine appearances out of the bullpen. He walked one and retired 14 of the last 15 batters he faced.
Nick Rhodes retired the first 13 batters in the second game before Sonny Garza tripled with one out. That started a streak of seven hits in 12 at-bats, as catcher Anthony Aguilera had RBI singles in both the fifth and sixth innings to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead.
"If you would have told me I would have gotten seven innings and three runs from Rhodes after what happened (Friday), I would have paid money for that to happen," Trapasso said.
The loss stopped a mini three-game winning streak for the 'Bows, who can do no worse than split the four-game series.
Jeff Van Doornum went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs and Jon Hee and Derek DuPree each had four hits as Hawaii continued its recent offensive outbreak in the first game.
Brandon Haislet's two-run single gave Hawaii a 2-0 lead in the first inning and Van Doornum followed with an RBI double to give some early support to starter Josh Slaats.
Slaats didn't give up a hit in the first three innings, but was tagged for four runs in the fourth after allowing the first four batters to reach base.
"Slaats just got out of rhythm and was working too fast," Trapasso said. "At this point, I was looking for a big effort out of him, but you never know with these freshmen. They're going to be up and down."
The four runs cut Hawaii's lead to 7-4, and the Spartans had the bases loaded with one out when reliever Cory Kahn entered the game. Kahn escaped the job by forcing Kyle Bellows to line into a double play and wound up pitching 4 1/3 innings of relief and gave up only one run.
"He really settled the game down and put up zeros for us," Trapasso said. "That was big."
DuPree finished the day 5-for-10 and extended his hitting streak to nine games.
Hawaii can earn its first series victory in conference play with a win in today's finale at 10 a.m. Alex Capaul (0-3, 7.04 ERA) will make his fourth start of the season.
