Dinner features winning brew
Local homebrewer Lili Hess won a slice of fame earlier this year when her Grape Pale Ale was one of two winners of the 2007 Samuel Adams Homebrew Competition.
Her prize included having her beer marketed nationwide, in bottles with her picture on the front.
Hess presents her beer at the Samuel Adams Beer Dinner at 6 p.m. April 11 at the Willows. The five-course meal will be paired with a variety of Samuel Adams beers. Hess' beer will be served during the pre-dinner reception.
Chef Jay Matsukawa's menu: Ahi Tartar (with White Ale), Spicy Grilled Shrimp & Green Papaya Salad (Summer Ale), Kobe Beef & Black Truffle Meatloaf (Boston Lager) and dessert of Blueberry Crisp (Cherry Wheat).
Cost is $65; $55 for members of the Willows' Beer Club. The restaurant is at 901 Hausten St. Call 952-9200.
Lanai lodge lands beer banquet
Rich Tucciarone, vice president of Kona Brewing Co., island-hops to Lanai to host a beer dinner April 26 at The Lodge at Koele.
Executive Sous Chef Thomas Bellec's menu: Pan-Seared Kona Crab Cake (with Steam Vent Lager), Organic Green Salad (Wailua Wheat), Seared Kalua Pork wrapped in Apple Wood Smoked Bacon (Pipeline Porter), Warm Brie Cheese with Roasted Pear on Egg Brioche (Belgian Triple) and Creamy Macadamia Nut Pie with Beer Ice Cream (Old Blowhole Barleywine).
Seating will be community-style, 6 to 9 p.m. Cost is $75. Call (808) 565-2469.
Jamba Juice offers free drink
Jamba Juice Hawaii will be introducing a new breakfast menu Tuesday, and to reinforce its mission of making breakfast a priority, all Jamba stores in Hawaii (excluding on the University of Hawaii campus) will be offering free 8-ounce samples of its Berry Topper and Mango Peach Topper from opening to 9 a.m.
The Toppers offer a nutritious breakfast of fruit blended with low-fat yogurt and soymilk, topped with organic granola for a healthful dose of fiber and protein.
Jamba also will introduce new baked goods to complement its menu of smoothies and juices. Included are reduced-fat Blueberry Lemon Loaf, Cranberry Orange Loaf and Zucchini Walnut Loaf, and Omega-3 Oatmeal and Chocolate Brownie cookies.
Kahala resort gets creative with fungi
The Kahala Hotel & Resort hones in on mushrooms with special events at two of its restaurants:
The Plumeria Beach House offers a three-course set menu with Roasted Crimini Mushroom Salad, Shiitake Mushroom Crusted Shutome with Sautéed Hamakua Mushroom and Crab Ragout, and Candy Cap Mushroom Bread Pudding, today through Thursday. Cost is $40.
Mushrooms also will be showcased at the Plumeria's seafood buffet April 11 and the Asian buffet April 12. Cost is $45 Adults; $23 children.
Hoku's offers a five-course "Magic of Mushrooms" set menu April 15 to 20, featuring Mushroom Cappuccino, Abalone Mushroom & Fresh Black Oregon Truffles, Hen of the Woods Mushroom with Dover Sole, Organic Mushrooms with Dry Aged Strip Loin, and Mushroom Forest Cake. Cost is $80.
