Castle takes out its frustration on Kaiser with a rout

The Castle Knights figured the best way to remove the foul taste from their mouths was to pay it forward to their next opponent.

The Knights scored six times in the first inning on their home field and tacked on five more in the third in pasting Kaiser 13-3 in five innings yesterday, a critical victory in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East race.

Castle (6-3) earned the tiebreaker in a season sweep of the Cougars (6-3), and if the Knights hold onto second place in the Red East with three games to play, they'll earn an opening-round bye in the OIA playoffs.

Windward rival Kailua spanked Castle 14-4 on Wednesday to maintain first place after a similarly shortened mercy-rule game, and the Knights responded in kind against another division contender. They hit 10-for-20 overall and the top four batters in their order combined to go 7-for-7 with seven RBIs and nine runs scored before being lifted after the third frame.

"After the game we had against Kailua everyone just came alive today, a really good hitting day," senior shortstop Kainoa Tom said. "It was a good comeback."

The Cougars threatened to extend the game in the top of the fifth by scoring two times, bringing the deficit down to 10 runs. But Knights starting pitcher Bryan Raines recovered by making a heads-up throw to third to catch runner Bryce Masaki off guard and off base, ending the game under the double-digit mercy rule.

Three Cougar pitchers were battered by the Castle offense for three innings before Cal Tashiro settled things down in the fourth, striking out the side.

By then the damage was done. Marcus Ofoia-Stevens hit a bases-clearing triple in the first to make it 6-0, and catcher Coby Agres earned two of his three RBIs on a single in the second with the bases loaded to push the lead to 8-1. Every player in the Knights' order went to bat in the first and third innings.

"It was good to jump on them early. Kaiser's a really good team, and well-coached. So we always prepare well for them," Castle co-head coach Chad Uyehara said. "When it comes close to the end of the season, I'm sure it'll help that we have the tiebreaker on them, but we have to keep on putting it together, keep on winning."

Tom, the Knights' leadoff man, has been a key to their success all OIA season. By going 2-for-2 with three runs scored, he upped his season performance to 17-for-27.

"I just been working on my swing a lot, my balance, that's very important," he said. "Just my backhand, come around a little quicker."

After Ofoia-Stevens struck out to open the third, six straight batters reached base and the game's only suspense became if the Cougars could extend this one beyond five frames.

Kaliko Cayetano-Tamashiro scored three times for Castle, while Joshua Serano and Keola Jarrett drove in two runs each.
