Dela Cruzes rally Moanalua
It's only fitting that a star lit the way to a new day for Moanalua.
Dawn Dela Cruz spanked a single to left in the top of the seventh, bringing home sister Hoku for the go-ahead run as sixth-ranked Moanalua rallied past No. 9 Castle 4-3 at the Knights' field.
Moanalua (5-1), which trailed 3-1 entering the sixth inning, gained sole possession of first place in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East. For the Dela Cruz sisters, it was the first time either could remember being partners for a game-winning run.
"Probably not since we were younger at Lakeside," Hoku Dela Cruz said of their PAL baseball team.
Dawn Dela Cruz, who tied the game with a two-run homer in the sixth, finished with three RBIs.
"I had faith in my team," she said.
Sarah Robinson went the distance, allowing two earned runs with eight strikeouts and two walks.
"When things go wrong, she just gets mad and goes to work," coach Kristie Morikawa said.
Castle slipped to 4-2 despite a stout performance by freshman pitcher Maycee Moe, who lasted six innings and gave up just two earned runs on five hits. Errors -- four in all -- did the Knights in, however.
FL MORRIS / FMORRIS@STARBULLETIN.COM
Castle baserunner Chandelle Dacosin slid home safely ahead of the tag by Moanalua catcher Kylee Oshiro during yesterday's game at Castle. Sixth-ranked Moanalua rallied in the top of the seventh to defeat the No. 9 Knights 4-3.
|
|
"This is upsetting, 'cause we really wanted it," Moe said. "We have to work harder and hopefully make the playoffs."
Castle coach John Berinobis hopes his team moves forward.
"Maycee did good. It's just a matter of putting it together. We just gotta dot the i's," he said. "Sarah was tough. She made adjustments."
With the score tied at 3 and Chandelle Dacosin on the mound in the seventh, Castle first baseman Leisha Liilii and shortstop Ryanne Dacosin committed errors. Castle seemed to be out of the woods, however, after catcher Kelsea Berinobis picked off Robinson from first base and Britni Ronolo grounded out.
That's when Dawn Dela Cruz smacked a 3-1 pitch to left, and sister Hoku scored easily from third for a 4-3 Moanalua lead.
Robinson got the first two Castle hitters out in the bottom of the seventh before Alana Abbey reached base on an infield error. Robinson then got Ryanne Dacosin to pop out, ending the game.
"We told them, 'This is your tough week.' We just had to gut it out," Morikawa said.
Her team faces East powerhouse Kailua on Saturday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
