Dr. Robert Schaen Desowitz, 82, of North Carolina, an Army veteran who served in World War II and a University of Hawaii professor emeritus, died. He was a professor of tropical medicine and medical microbiology with the John A. Burns School of Medicine and School of Public Health at UH, where his studies included the effects of the herbicide Agent Orange on the population of Vietnam. Earlier he worked as chief of parasitology with the Southeast Asian Treaty Organization laboratory in Bangkok, chairman of medical parasitology with the University of Singapore School of Medicine, and principal science officer and head of the protozoology section at the West African Institute in Nigeria. He was born in New York. He is survived by wife Carrolee, son Gregory, daughter Duba D. Leibell and four grandchildren. Services held in Pinehurst, N.C.
