Vercruyssen wins trampoline title

Hawaii's Nani Vercruyssen captured the trampoline title in the women's junior elite division at the Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships yesterday in San Jose, Calif.

Vercruyssen, the 2007 World Age Group champion, tied Russia's Nadezhda Glebova in the preliminaries while helping the U.S. team win the bronze medal. She posted a score of 35.80 in the finals to edge Canada's Samantha Sendel for the individual gold.

Hawaii's softball finale canceled

The final game of Hawaii's Western Athletic Conference softball series at Louisiana Tech was canceled yesterday due to inclement weather in Ruston, La. The game will not be made up.

The Wahine (28-11, 4-1 WAC), who won the first two games of the series, return home to face San Jose State on April 11 and 12.

Mizutani headlines Quarterback Club

Ron Mizutani will be among the speakers at today's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club at the Pagoda Hotel.

Also scheduled to speak are Norman Nakanishi, lead chaplain for the Hawaii football team, and Dr. Jeffrey Wang, a member of the National Rifle Association and shooting instructor.

The luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m. with the program set to begin at noon.

Hawaii Pacific loses in softball tourney

The Humboldt State softball team scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat Hawaii Pacific 4-3 in the quarterfinals of the Mizuno Tournament of Champions yesterday in Turlock, Calif.

HPU (26-5) led 3-2 going into the final inning, but Humboldt State loaded the bases and took the lead on Lindsay Warren's two-run single. The Sea Warriors put the tying run on second in the bottom of the seventh, but the rally fell short. Courtney Kessell (15-2) took the loss for HPU.

» The Chaminade softball team lost to Chico State 8-0 in the Mizuno tournament earlier yesterday to fall to 9-23.
