FAST FACTS HAWAII

Firsts and almost firsts in Hawaii ......

Here is the story behind one of Hawaii's "firsts," as noted by former state statistician Robert C. Schmitt.

» Cockfighting: Cockfighting ... was a popular sport with the ali'i in ancient Hawaii and involved heavy betting.

Declared a misdemeanor in 1884 in legislation outlawing cruelty to animals, cockfighting lost much of its earlier popularity by the end of the 19th century. Following the influx of Filipino plantation workers after 1906, however, it quickly regained its place as a major, although illegal, spectator sport.
