Kauai resort hosts culinary challenge
Shells Restaurant at the Sheraton Kauai Resort is offering its own "Iron Chef"-style challenge, with diners as the judges.
Every Thursday, two chefs will offer entrees based on a single set of ingredients. At the end of the month, one will be declared winner of the "Culinary Challenge," based on surveys of diners and the number of entrees sold.
The championship comes with a $100 prize for the chef.
Last month, executive sous-chef Edwin Mizuno and sous-chef Ikaika Manaku faced off, working with ingredients that included filet mignon, jumbo prawns, jabong, arugula, pickled ginger, green onions, caviar and champagne.
Call 742-4011.
Willows dons kilts for beer event
Beers of Ireland and Scotland are the focus of this month's "Hops & Grinds" event, from 5 to 9 p.m. April 4 at the Willows.
Represented will be breweries such as Brauerie de Scilly, E. Smithwick's & Sons, Guinness, Inveralmond and Traquair, all from the home countries, as well as beers inspired by the styles of Ireland and Scotland, from breweries including George Killian's, Mactarnahan's, Rogue and Sam Adams.
The event doubles as a welcome "ceilidh" (party) for participants in the Hawaiian Scottish Festival, to be held Saturday and next Sunday at Kapiolani Park.
Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Included: a Scottish-themed pupu buffet, traditional dancing, bagpipers and music by Chicago's Switchback. Tickets are available at the Willows, Liquor Collection, Wine Stop and Tamura's Kaimuki. Must be 21 or older. Call 952-9200.
