SACRAMENTO » The Hawaii baseball team once again found itself on the wrong end of a game decided in the final innings.
Gabe Jacobo broke up a 2-2 tie with an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to give Sacramento State a 4-2 victory over the Rainbows yesterday in its Western Athletic Conference home opener at Hornet Field.
It's the third straight loss for Hawaii, which has been either tied or down by one in the eighth inning of all three games.
"We've got to find some guys to get some hits and make a few plays," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. "You're not going to win a lot of games with four hits."
Jared Alexander went 7 1/3 innings for the Rainbows and left with the game tied and runners on first and second. Matt Daly came on in relief and surrendered the double to Jacobo that scored Hunter Martinez. David Flores also scored on the play when Nate Young bobbled the relay throw to allow Flores to sneak in from third base.
"Daly came in and made a bad pitch and that's all she wrote," Trapasso said.
Alexander allowed three earned runs and gave up six hits while striking out four and walking three to fall to 3-3 for the season.
Sacramento State starter Jose Ramirez allowed two runs on four hits in 6 2/3 innings. Jeff Roth faced the minimum seven batters over the final 2 1/3 innings to pick up the win in relief.
Hawaii was held hitless until Jeff Van Doornum's one-out single in the fifth inning.
Designated hitter Jeff Hannah broke the scoreless tie to lead off the bottom of the inning with a solo homer to right field for the Hornets.
Sacramento State loaded the bases with one out in the sixth and scored a run on a fielder's choice before Alexander struck out Hannah to end the inning.
Hawaii tied the game in the seventh on a two-run single by Kevin Macdonald with two outs. Brandon Haislet singled to start the inning and Van Doornum and Evan Zimny, who started in right, drew back-to-back walks. Landon Hernandez popped out to right before Macdonald came through with the big two-out hit.
"It's good to see him get a couple of hits," Trapasso said. "He's been struggling. Hopefully it gets him going."
Macdonald had two of Hawaii's four hits and reached base in all three plate appearances.
The two teams will play a doubleheader today beginning at 8 a.m. Hawaii time. Senior Nick Rhodes will start the first game and freshman Josh Slaats takes the mound in game two.
