Kailua fights back to clip Kaiser
No deficit is enough to crush a winning attitude, especially when first place is on the line.
Kailua rallied from a three-run deficit in the seventh inning and mustered a final score in the eighth to overcome Kaiser 9-8 in an extra-inning thriller yesterday at the Surfriders' field.
The Cougars led the whole game -- including 8-4 in the top of the sixth -- until Kailua's dormant bats awoke to send home five runners in the final three innings, allowing the Surfriders to move into sole possession of first place in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East at 5-1. Kaiser dropped to 4-2.
One wouldn't know Jordan Limahai had no experience coming up with game-winning hits, judging only by his placid demeanor after his two-out single to right scored Bobby Lastimosa to end the contest.
"We wanted to just pick and pick and pick and hopefully it comes out (for us)," Limahai said. "Just battle. It was a war today."
Kailua coach Corey Ishigo had been waiting for that kind of play from his first baseman for quite some time.
"That probably was the most surprising thing," Ishigo said. "He been with us on the varsity for three years and has never come through in a way like he did today."
It wouldn't have been possible without the hustle of left fielder Matt Nakata, who was safe on a close play at second base in the seventh that would have ended the game.
That play was one of two costly errors in the inning for Kaiser -- after RBI singles by Surfriders' right fielder Rob DeMarsh and Limahai made it 8-7 -- to undo the Cougars' early advantage. An infield pop-up got away from the Kaiser defense, allowing Limahai to advance to third. What followed shifted the momentum squarely to the home team's camp heading into the extra inning.
Kaiser shortstop Cal Tashiro fielded a two-hopper from Kailua's Jared Iha and, after a moment's hesitation looking toward first base, stepped on second almost exactly as Nakata did -- but the advantage went to the runner. A cheer went up from the Surfriders' dugout as Limahai crossed home plate for an 8-all tie.
"We told him before the play, our play is (first) but if you have to make a last-minute decision, try to get the guy at second," said Cougars assistant coach Vince Bedoya, who filled in for Peter Ho (away visiting his son on a trip). "Just a tough play."
Bedoya was feeling pretty good about things after Pono Meyer's three-run shot over the 400-foot wall in center field put the Cougars up 5-2 in the third.
"When you jump on top of Kailua like that, you need as much runs as you can get," he said. "You know they're going to come out and hit the ball too and score runs."
Kailua's Kale Sumner scored three times and set the tone in the seventh with a sharply-hit leadoff double off reliever Shotaro Saito to left field.
Conversely, the Kaiser offense dried up as Kailua's hit its stride.
The Cougars scored all eight runs off Kailua starter Jared Tamanaha before he was lifted to start the seventh in favor of Bryson Gauthe, who pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the win. He retired Kaiser in order in the eighth.
"That's how (we) play -- never give up until the last out is made," Ishigo said. "We feel like we can come back from any amount of runs down."
