Ontai helps Mules pull out a win
The book on Leilehua, at least yesterday, added a chapter on bunting.
The Mules mustered just four base hits but pulled out a 3-2 win over Kapolei yesterday at Fred Wright Park. Desmond Ontai went 6 1/3 innings for the win, outdueling Trent Hiramoto.
Ontai, the No. 2 starter, crafted his longest stint of the season. He permitted eight hits, but used an effective pickoff move to keep the Hurricanes on a leash.
"He pitched a helluva game," Kapolei coach Tom Ebanez said. "He kept us off balance."
Darren Baccay recorded the final two outs in a dramatic seventh inning for the save as Leilehua improved to 3-3 in Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West play. Despite a 4-for-4 effort by Curtis Donald, Kapolei suffered its second loss in four days and slipped to 2-3.
Baccay switched from shortstop to the mound after Ontai gave up a bunt single and a walk in the top of the seventh. Baccay's first pitch was belted to left-center for a run-scoring double by Kapolei's Curtis Donald.
With a 3-2 lead, Baccay got pinch hitter Dustin Elisara to hit a grounder to short, and Brett Nakasone threw out Donald at home plate for the second out. After Kalani Brackenridge walked to load the bases, Baccay and sophomore Cody Kamei battled tooth and nail. After 10 pitches, including five foul balls, Kamei popped out to end the game.
It was a frustrating afternoon for the visiting Hurricanes, who loaded the bases twice without scoring. They also outhit Leilehua 8-4, but left eight runners on base and committed three errors.
"Everything we do in practice has to be with a purpose. We just weren't prepared," Ebanez said. "Leilehua had no errors. I give them credit."
The Mules used the bunt in both of their run-scoring innings, but they also had key information.
"We heard that their corners are on a trip, so we tried to take advantage of that," Leilehua coach Mike Kim said.
The 'Canes took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Hiramoto walked with the bases loaded, allowing Kyle Dela Cruz to score. However, Christian Estabillo flew out to right, ending the inning.
The Mules manufactured their first run when Joseph Lorenzo led off the second inning with a bunt that Estabillo, the third baseman, misplayed. Lorenzo stole second and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Nakasone. Hiramoto then balked in Lorenzo to tie the game at 1.
Leilehua scored two runs in the fourth with help from the 'Canes. After Ontai walked, Lorenzo laid down a bunt toward third base. Hiramoto's throw to first, with second baseman Kamei hustling over, was late and off-line. Pinch runner James Samuel scored to give the Mules a 2-1 lead.
Nakasone then lined a pitch to center, where Donald's sliding attempt for the catch failed. Nakasone's double brought in Lorenzo to give Leilehua a 3-1 lead.
Donald's third hit of the game, a one-out single in the top of the fifth, didn't hurt after Ontai picked him off first base.
Hiramoto gave up two earned runs, struck out one and walked two with just 71 pitches.
