Duhaylonsod’s grand slam sparks No. 2 Mililani to win over No. 3 Campbell
The wind usually prevails wherever Makani Duhaylonsod brings her fastball.
Yesterday, it prevailed with the senior at the plate. Duhaylonsod, whose first name translates to "the wind" in Hawaiian, socked a grand slam home run and hurled No. 2 Mililani over third-ranked Campbell 6-1 yesterday at the Sabers' field.
Mililani improved to 3-0 and seized first place in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West. Duhaylonsod (2-0) struck out five and walked only one against a team that swept the Trojans in two regular-season games last year.
"I had to adjust to the environment. It's hot and dusty here," she said. "We know Campbell is a really, really tough team."
An error-free defense, anchored by shortstop Courtney Senas and third baseman Celina Garces, was a major factor, but miscues by Campbell (2-1) shortstop Nicole Arata and third baseman Gerika Pantohan gave the visitors a boost. After Kristi Oshiro walked to load the bases, Chanelle Senas singled to center to bring home Courtney Abear for a 1-0 Trojans' lead. Center fielder Brit Garcia threw out Rebecca Lee, who tried to score from second, to prevent another Mililani run.
With first base open, Campbell starter Katie Manuma intentionally walked Courtney Senas. Duhaylonsod, who struck out in her first at-bat, quickly fell behind 0-2 and stepped out of the box.
Mililani coach Rose Antonio had plenty to say from the third-base box.
"She said, 'Don't try to kill the ball. You just gotta make contact,' I just didn't want to strike out again," Duhaylonsod said.
Manuma's next delivery was supposed to be a waste pitch, but it caught the outside edge of the plate, waist-high -- Duhaylonsod's wheelhouse.
The ball sailed to deep right-center for the grand slam.
"In this wind, once you put it up there, it'll fly," Campbell coach David Perreira said. "I knew it was trouble. She clutched up, man. She struck out that first at-bat, and then she takes it out of the park."
With a 5-0 lead, Duhaylonsod had more than enough support. Campbell managed a run in the bottom of the fourth on Randi Schoening's two-out single to left, a hard grounder just inside the third-base bag that scored Arata from second.
The Trojans added a run in the fifth on Glenelle Nitta's single to right. Senas scored on the play to give Mililani a 6-1 lead.
Duhaylonsod is winning despite tendinitis in her right knee. Consistent rehab work -- a lot of stretching -- is helping.
"Campbell is gonna come back even stronger," she cautioned. "So we have to come back stronger, too."
Manuma struck out two and walked two in five innings.
The one mistake pitch to Duhaylonsod marred an otherwise solid performance.
"She is actually a good pitcher. She's strong and she's only a sophomore," Antonio said.
