Gonzalez leads UH to softball win

Freshman Melissa Gonzalez drove in three runs with three hits as No. 17 Hawaii beat Colorado State 8-1 in the Bank of Hawaii Invitational at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium yesterday.

Jessica Morton (4-0) allowed six hits as UH improved to 23-9.

In an earlier game, Marissa Drewrey pitched a no-hitter as Cal blanked Saint Mary's 7-0. Drewrey struck out nine and walked three. Gina Leomiti and Bernice Masaniai both homered for the Bears, who won their 10th game in a row.

Also, Colorado State beat Saint Mary's 4-3 in eight innings.

UHH sweeps BYU-Hawaii in tennis

The NCAA Division II top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis team swept Chaminade 9-0 yesterday in Laie.

Elwen Li and Maggie Deng led the Seasiders, who improved to 14-0 for the season, in a clean sweep of six singles and three doubles matches. The Seasiders, who have 74 straight wins, did not drop a game against the Silverswords.

Hawaii-Hilo signs soccer player

Meghan Cochran will join the University of Hawaii-Hilo women's soccer team, Vulcans coach Travis Clarke announced yesterday.

Cochran, a 5-foot-9 Fresno City College forward, was a two-time first-team all-conference selection and 2007 National Soccer Coaches Association of America second-team All-American.

She scored 35 goals and accounted for 16 assists during her two seasons at FCC, helping lead the team to a top-five national ranking.

During her prep career, Cochran was the all-time leading scorer and four-time all-league pick at Clovis Buchanan (Calif.) High School.
