Maryknoll halts Pac-Five’s streak
Just like that, Pac-Five's winning streak blew away on a gusty afternoon.
Maryknoll exorcised bitter defeats of years past as Ariel Silva hurled a four-hitter in the Spartans' 3-1 win over Pac-Five yesterday at Ala Wai Community Park.
"We never beat 'em before. We've had a young team, but now we've been playing together a long time," said Silva, who has started every game on the mound.
The junior used an array of risers, screwballs and changeups to silence the Wolfpack.
"My defense was a big help. We got the lead and that was a big relief," she said.
Silva fanned six and walked three with help from the bench.
"Our pitching coach, Ron (Buis), told her to pitch the way the winds are going," Spartans coach John Uekawa said.
That allowed Silva's screwballs and risers to stay up. She outdueled Pac-Five's Annie Lariosa, who allowed only one earned run on just three hits.
"Annie did a terrific job. We hit the ball hard with runners in scoring position," Pac-Five coach Randy Oyama said. "We just hit 'em right at people. Maryknoll played very well today. They capitalized on some mistakes we made, but our team scrapped back."
Pac-Five fell to 3-1 in league play.
The gusts wreaked havoc on both defenses. Maryknoll finished with five errors and Pac-Five had four.
Maryknoll struck in the top of the first when lead-off hitter Shay Shibata singled, stole second and came home on a two-out single to left by Jessica Guillermo.
Pac-Five loaded the bases in the bottom of the first, but Silva struck out Alena Hookano to end the threat.
The Pack answered in the third inning. Tatum Tokuda reached base on an error by third baseman Kori Nishitani, advanced to second on a wild pitch and then on to third on a passed ball. Lariosa then delivered a sacrifice fly to center and Tokuda scored to tie the game.
Two Pac-Five errors aided Maryknoll in the fourth inning. The second error, a high throw to first by third baseman Hookano with two outs, allowed Guillermo and Kimi Okaneku to score.
Pac-Five threatened in the bottom of the fourth, but with runners at third and second, Sammy Ford lined out to first to end the inning.
The Wolfpack made more noise in the bottom of the seventh, but Ford was thrown out at home by Maryknoll first baseman Shelcie Rapozo-Dela Cruz to end the game.
Pac-Five's team is quite familiar with Maryknoll. At the intermediate level, about half of the Pack played for the Spartans, Silva said.
