Buffs' Steinhoff gets hoops honor
Punahou forward Kameron Steinhoff has been named the Gatorade Hawaii Boys Basketball Player of the Year.
Steinhoff, a 6-foot-4 senior, averaged 17.7 points and 6.5 rebounds in leading the Buffanblu to the Division I state championship.
UH splits softball doubleheader
Hawaii earned a split of its opening-day games in the Bank of Hawaii Invitational yesterday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
UH lost to Saint Mary's 2-1 in its first game, then came back to outslug Colorado State 8-4 in the nightcap. UH (22-9) and CSU (14-10) meet again tonight at 6.
UH finishes fourth in golf tourney
Lisa Kajihara shot a 78 yesterday to lead Hawaii to a fourth-place finish in the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.
Arizona's Alison Walshe won the tournament with a three-day total of 3-under 213. Kajihara tied for ninth at 225. UH's Carolina Perez tied for 17th at 234.
Oklahoma State won the team title at 16-over-par 880, followed by Arizona (893), Arizona State (897) and UH (928). UH-Hilo finished 15th, led by Jayna Shimomura's 76 yesterday.
Abubo advances in surf meet
Hawaii's Megan Abubo won her first-round heat today to advance at the ASP Rip Curl Women's Pro at Bells Beach in Australia.
Abubo's score of 15.50 moved her into the third round, where she will face Rosanne Hodge of South Africa.

HPU sweeps William Jewell in tennis
The Hawaii Pacific University men's and women's tennis teams both earned 9-0 wins over William Jewell College yesterday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
Hendrik Bode, Daniel Luedi and Nikola Petrov won their singles matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores for the NCAA Division II 10th-ranked HPU men's team. The No. 22 Sea Warriors women also had little trouble in improving to 11-3.
» Brigham Young-Hawaii scored a 9-0 men's tennis win over California Lutheran yesterday in Laie. The Seasiders women beat Cornell 9-0.
