Three finalists from Hawaii made the cut in the third annual Gallo Family Vineyards Gold Medal Awards, honoring top artisanal producers. The Original Hawaiian Chocolate Factory in Kona, Surfing Goat Dairy in Kula, Maui, and Mayflower Fisheries in Kilauea, Kauai, earned honors for their commitment to quality, tradition and agricultural sustainability.
The first round was based on written applications. The next step takes place Tuesday, when culinary experts judge food submissions (shipped to New York) in seven categories. National grand-prize winners will be announced in early April, with a nice reward to follow: a $5,000 business development grant and a trip to New York City for lunch with the Gallo family.
The overall winner of the All Artisanal Award receives a trip to Aspen, Colo., for the Food and Wine Classic in June.
