Big Isle food bank to get $10,000 donation
Waste Management of Hawaii will donate $10,000 to the
Hawaii Food Basket Inc., a food bank on the Big Island, to help its spring food drive.
West Hawaii Today, Hawaii Tribune Herald and
North Hawaii News worked in partnership with Waste Management in encouraging residents to raise $40,000 and collect 50,000 pounds of food.
Jordan Bayang, a ninth-grader at Hoala School, received the Excellence in Community Service Award from the Hawaii State National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. He has been a volunteer at the school's Camp Kokua since he was 8 years old. In 2007 he was one of two top volunteers recognized in the national 12th Annual Prudential Spirit of Community Award.
Boost Mobile donated $3,300 to the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii. An additional $1,700 was raised during a free-gas giveaway at Lex Brodie's Tire Co., on Queen Street, as part of Boost Mobile promotion. That was also given to the Boys & Girls Club for a total donation of $5,000.
The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation gave $480,000 to Hina Mauka, a drug and alcohol treatment center in Kaneohe. The funds will be used to complete Hina Mauka's "Reaching Out" capital campaign to accommodate the increasing demand for treatment services.
