Local TV ratings landscape changing
KHON-TV and Fox keep its lead in three of the five air times
The latest Honolulu Nielsen ratings show strides and slips by local stations' news operations as well as the impact of the strike by entertainment writers.
KHON-TV maintained its news lead in the morning and at 6 p.m. and its network, Fox, remains No. 1 in prime time -- then again, it is American Idol season.
"I'm happy that we're still the leader in the morning by a wide margin," said President and General Manager Joe McNamara. He also cited news anchor Joe Moore's performance at 6 p.m.
KHON also had the Super Bowl, which got a 46 rating and an 84 share, meaning that 84 percent of the isle households that were watching television at the time were tuned in to the Super Bowl, said Susii Hearst, general sales manager.
The writers' strike "had an effect on everybody," said KITV's President and General Manager Mike Rosenberg, though KHON was able to retain prime-time viewers with American Idol.
Other network affiliates dipped. Independent stations, such as PBS Hawaii, KIKU and KBFD saw increases, as viewers not interested in re-runs sought other options.
KITV officials are happiest that the station regained No. 1 status at 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, said Rosenberg. It also holds its lead during the 5:30 p.m. world news block.
KGMB-TV is beaming about the growth of its "Sunrise" morning show which debuted in September and is up to No. 2 in the morning television ratings race. It has gained two share points since the November ratings.
At 10 p.m., KGMB's news is No. 1 Monday through Friday, as it was a year ago.
KHNL/KFVE-TV debuted weekday news shows, at 11 a.m. on KHNL and 6:30 p.m. on KFVE.
Both registered a small reading in their first ratings period and further growth is expected, said John Fink, vice president and general manager.
The 11 a.m. newscast is also streamed online, where it can be viewed at any time.
"The numbers are growing ... and we think it's going to get better as more people realize it's there."
