UCI embarasses UH in doubleheader sweep
From staff and wire reports
IRVINE, Calif. » Hawaii's struggles against ranked teams continued yesterday as the Rainbows dropped a doubleheader to No. 13 UC Irvine.
The Anteaters' offense made Hawaii pitching look silly in defeating the Rainbows 14-3 and 13-4 at Anteater Ballpark.
Hawaii (7-11) fell to 0-8 this season against teams ranked in the Baseball America Top 25.
"This one is on me," Hawaii head coach Mike Trapasso said. "Honestly, I felt like I let our guys down because we didn't come ready to play this weekend and that is on me. Today we just had no chance. We didn't hit, didn't pitch and the defense wasn't so bad, but we made a few errors."
The first inning of the opening game was an indication of things to come for Hawaii. With two outs, shortstop Greg Garcia seemed to throw out Jeff Cusick at first to end the inning. The first-base umpire called him out and most of the Rainbows were already in the dugout when the call was overturned. After Hawaii returned to the field, Francis Larson hit a two-run double for the first of his five hits in the game and it was all downhill from there.
Eight of UC Irvine's 18 hits in the first game went for extra bases, and the Anteaters hit three home runs in the second game.
Junior Matt Daly took the loss for the Rainbows to fall to 3-2 for the season. Daly allowed seven hits and six runs in four innings with two walks and four strikeouts.
Garcia had to leave the game in the third inning after injuring himself on a bunt single. Nate Young took his place and went 2-for-3 with a triple.
The Anteaters continued the onslaught in the second game as Rainbows starter Nicholas Rhodes only lasted an inning. Larson blasted a two-run home run as part of a five-run first as the Anteaters sent 11 batters to the plate and racked up seven hits. Larson finished the day 8-for-9 with eight RBIs.
Rhodes walked the first batter in the second inning and was yanked for reliever Harrison Kuroda. Kuroda gave the club four innings, allowing three runs, with Jayson Kramer following with four runs over the final three innings. Trapasso said outfielder Derek Dupree would have been next in line for time on the hill in the blowout if Kramer was unable to finish the job.
Hawaii hosts San Diego for a single game on Tuesday before opening WAC play against Fresno State at Les Murakami Stadium beginning Thursday. Trapasso doesn't expect a repeat of this weekend after being outscored 36-7 in three games by the Anteaters.
"I think honestly you just flush it," Trapasso said. "You are not going to learn anything from a beating that bad except how bad things can get when you don't come ready to play. We can't play any worse than that."
