A CELEBRATION OF DIFFERENCESDENNIS ODA / DODA@STARBULLETIN.COM
The fourth annual "Maile's Dream: A Celebration of Differences" Family Fair, held yesterday at Washington Middle School in honor of 8-year-old Maile Ogata, featured food booths, entertainment, games, crafts, a silent auction and a white elephant sale. Maile, shown fourth from right singing into a microphone, was born with Apert Syndrome, which occurs in approximately one out of every 160,000 to 200,000 live births. The condition is characterized by specific malformation of the skull, mid-face, hands and feet and requires multiple surgeries; Ogata already has undergone six procedures. Proceeds from yesterday's event will benefit Easter Seals Hawaii.
