Maile Ogata has been through many painful surgeries, and her family has undergone incredible emotional and financial challenges.
The time has come to celebrate.
Maile was born with Apert's syndrome, which causes physical problems and developmental delays. But through a regimen of physical, occupational and speech therapy, Maile is now able to attend general education third-grade classes.
Cindy Ogata is marking her daughter's accomplishments at an event Saturday, the fourth annual "Maile's Dream: A Celebration of Differences," 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Washington Middle School.
The event honors Easter Seals Hawaii, which provided Maile with therapy and support.
Entertainment will be provided by Maile's group, A Class Act, and other performers with special needs. Other activities include a magic show, silent auction, white-elephant sale, face and nail painting, and activities that show the challenges faced by those with special needs.
Admission is free. Proceeds from the auction and foods sales will benefit Easter Seals Hawaii. Call 973-0177.
