’Bows falter in overtime
Idaho rises on the road, sending UH to its third straight defeat
STORY SUMMARY »
The final homestand of the season for the Hawaii men's basketball team got off to a less-than-auspicious start last night when the Rainbow Warriors couldn't finish it in regulation .
Instead, the Vandals won for the first time in 14 road games when pulling away for an 85-77 Western Athletic Conference victory in overtime at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Idaho (7-19, 4-10 WAC) outscored Hawaii (11-14, 7-6) 17-9 in overtime, snapping the Rainbows' five-game home winning streak and extending their skid to three.
UH had trailed by as many as 15 before rallying late. Tied at 68 in regulation, the Rainbows had the ball with 22 seconds remaining but failed to score.
Sophomore forward Bill Amis scored 20 points and senior forward Bobby Nash added 19 for Hawaii, which hosts league-leading Boise State tomorrow night. Senior guard Matt Gibson added 18 points before fouling out.

Hawaii hadn't lost at home in more than a month. Idaho hadn't won on the road all season.
Both streaks came to a stunning end last night as the Vandals raided the Stan Sheriff Center for an 85-77 overtime win over the Rainbow Warriors before a crowd of 3,411.
A 3-pointer by Idaho's Michael Crowell with 22.1 seconds left in regulation knotted the game at 68-68, and the Vandals (7-19, 4-10 Western Athletic Conference) went 5-for-6 from the field and 6-for-7 from the free-throw line in the extra period to send the Rainbows (11-15, 7-6) to their third straight loss.
"It's disappointing to lose on your home court, or lose anywhere," UH coach Bob Nash said. "But it's doubly disappointing when you have the lead and all you have to do is come down and make a stop on defense.
"When the game is in the balance you gotta make a stop on defense and we didn't get it done tonight."
The loss snapped Hawaii's five-game winning streak at the Sheriff Center, while Idaho improved to 1-13 on the road. The 'Bows close the home schedule tomorrow night against WAC leader Boise State.
UH senior guard Matt Gibson returned from a knee injury to spark the Rainbows off the bench with 18 points and nine assists before fouling out with 27.9 seconds left in overtime.
Forward Bill Amis finished with a career-high 20 and Bobby Nash hit for 19.
But it wasn't enough to overcome a balanced Idaho attack spurred by guard Jordan Brooks.
Brooks finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and a career-high 14 assists against only two turnovers, and the Vandals shot 51 percent from the field.
"If I start passing it first, it's going to open the floor for me as I drive," Brooks said. "So that's what I was trying to do, be a point guard first. Just execute and run our offense all the way through."
Crowell had 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Mike Hall added 16. Hall and Crowell hit four 3-pointers each as Idaho went 11-for-22 from beyond the arc.
Gibson, the Rainbows' leading scorer, hadn't practiced this week and entered the game at the 10:06 mark of the first half.
The Rainbows began the game 7-for-21 from the field in falling behind by 15 before Gibson sparked a 12-0 run late in the half to close the gap.
Gibson started the spurt with a driving layup and hit a 3-pointer from the corner. He then assisted on UH's next three scores, the last a 3-pointer by Adhar Mayen to cut the margin to three.
"You find the rhythm of the game," Gibson said. "I wish I could have been in practice and working out and things like that, but you go with what you've got."
Idaho took a 33-28 lead into halftime only to see UH heat up from outside to move ahead. The Rainbows hit four 3-pointers in the first 6 minutes of the half with Gibson's shot from the left corner giving Hawaii its first lead at 42-41.
But Idaho responded and led 60-53 when Mike Hall dropped in his third 3-pointer of the night at the 6:25 mark.
Hawaii closed to within a point with 1:50 left, when Brooks lost control on a drive then lost his cool and was hit with a technical foul.
Nash dropped in both free throws to give UH the lead with 38.9 seconds left.
After two more free throws by Nash, Crowell stunned the crowd with a 3-pointer from the left wing to tie the game. UH worked the clock down and Amis had a shot blocked by Darin Nagle to send the game into overtime.
Idaho claimed a five-point lead in overtime when Hall rained in a trey and Crowell scored on a layup. After Gibson made a free throw, Brooks drove for a dunk to put Idaho up 79-73.
Hawaii closed to 79-77 when Gibson picked up his fifth foul. Brooks missed the front end of a one-and-one and UH's Jared Dillinger had the rebound knocked away from him. Nagle retrieved the ball and sunk two free throws to extend the lead.
"We have to put this one behind us and move toward getting ready for Boise because I'm sure they're not going to feel sorry for us," Bob Nash said.
