Stanford gets the best of Warriors
STORY SUMMARY »
It looked more like an Interscholastic League of Honolulu volleyball match than a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation one.

Five ILH products were on the Burnham Pavilion court last night -- three for Stanford, two for Hawaii. The outcome reflected those numbers as well, with the Cardinal outlasting the Warriors 3-2.
Helped by 19 kills and three aces from freshman hitter Spencer McLachlin (Punahou '07), Stanford rallied past Hawaii 26-30, 30-26, 30-25, 28-30, 16-14.
Sophomore setter Kawika Shoji (Iolani '06) had 70 assists and freshman libero Jordan Inafuku (Kamehameha '07) finished with 18 digs as the Cardinal (11-6, 7-6) defeated the Warriors for the first time in nine meetings, dating back to the 2003 season.
Junior Jim Clar led Hawaii (6-8, 5-6) with a career-high 29 digs and freshman Joshua Walker added 15 kills. For the Warriors' ILH connection, junior setter Sean Carney (Iolani '04) had 52 assists and freshman middle Keali'i Frank (Punahou '06) had one kill and one ace.

From staff and wire reports
STANFORD, Calif. » Stanford 3, Hawaii 2.
The number of Interscholastic League of Honolulu products on the respective rosters for the Cardinal and Warriors matched the final outcome of last night's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball match.
No. 9 Stanford -- with Kawika Shoji, Spencer McLachlin and Jordan Inafuku -- outlasted Hawaii -- with Sean Carney and Keali'i Frank -- 26-30, 30-26, 30-25, 28-30, 16-14 at Burnham Pavilion.
Outside hitter McLachlin (Punahou '07) finished with 19 kills, three aces and three blocks, setter Shoji (Iolani '06) with 70 assists and 15 digs, and libero Inafuku (Kamehameha '07) with 18 digs as the Cardinal beat the Warriors for the first time since 2003, snapping an eight-match losing skid.
"Stanford is a very good team," Hawaii coach Mike Wilton said. "They're young, but their youth is very experienced. Kawika does a nice job running their team.
"For us, when we served in, we were in control. When we served out, we weren't in control. We battled back, but we just need to be better at keeping our serves in."
That's the goal, Wilton said, when the teams meet again tonight (5 p.m. Hawaii time). The Warriors committed 20 momentum-killing service errors, including eight in Game 2.
Hawaii (6-8, 5-6 MPSF) wasted a career night by junior hitter Jim Clar, who finished with 29 kills. Freshman Joshua Walker added 15 and sophomore middle Steven Grgas nine with no errors on 17 swings.
"Steven is hard to handle when he gets the ball," Wilton said. "We need to do a better job at getting him the ball. We set too many to the outside.
"I feel good about how we were able to come back after putting ourselves in a hole with missed serves. There's still a big learning curve with our guys, but they're climbing the ladder."
Hawaii appeared to be on the top rung in Game 5, leading 8-5 when changing sides at the break. The momentum traded sides as well, with Matt Ceran serving for three unanswered points as Stanford (11-6, 7-6) jumped out to a 9-8 lead.
Kills by McLachlin and Evan Romero put the Cardinal ahead at 13-10, but the Warriors battled back to close to 13-12 on a kill by Jake Schkud and a stuff of Romero by Grgas and Schkud.
Nejc Zemljak's service error gave Stanford match point only to have Walker put down two kills to tie it at 14. Ceran's 21st kill gave the Cardinal a third shot to end it with Garrett Werner blocking Clar to finish it after 2 hours and 26 minutes.
Romero matched Clar for match-high honors with 29 kills. UH libero Ric Cervantes finished with a match-high 23 digs.
As for Hawaii's ILH connection, Carney (Iolani '04) had 52 assists and an ace, and Frank (Punahou '06) added an ace and a block.
