Lava finger expected to increase speed

A finger of the lava flow from Kilauea Volcano has advanced into the Royal Gardens subdivision by at least few hundred yards since Monday, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologist Jim Kauahikaua said.
Kauahikaua, with the U.S. Geological Survey, said yesterday the finger of lava going down Royal Avenue was about a mile into the subdivision and would likely increase speed as it flowed down a steep hill.
Another finger of lava along Prince Avenue to the west is about a half mile into the subdivision, he said.
Two occupied houses in the subdivision are no closer than 450 yards to the lava, he said.
