Staff and wire reports
STOCKTON, Calif. » Hours after slipping out of the national poll for the first time in the program's history, the Hawaii men's volleyball team made the more important upward move in the standings.
Thanks to a 30-25, 25-30, 30-18, 30-26 victory over Pacific at the Spanos Center last night, the Warriors moved into eighth place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Senior hitter Jake Schkud had a team-high 17 kills as the Warriors (6-7, 5-5 MPSF) defeated the Tigers (1-14, 1-11) for the 21st consecutive time.
Jim Clar added 12 kills, Joshua Walker 11 kills and Keali'i Frank 10 kills for Hawaii, which heads over to Stanford for two critical matches with the No. 9 Cardinal tomorrow and Thursday.
Stanford (10-6, 6-6) split its matches with previously undefeated Brigham Young last week in Provo, Utah, taking the Cougars to five Friday before losing, then winning in a sweep Saturday.
"They beat them soundly, in the toughest place to play in America, Smith Fieldhouse," Warriors coach Mike Wilton said of Stanford's victory. "We haven't seen tape on (Stanford) yet, but we know they're good."
Wilton felt his team played well for most of the hour and 58 minutes. The Warriors, aced 14 times in Friday's win over UOP, gave up one ace last night, and that came in Game 1.
"I thought we sided-out pretty well," Wilton said. "We did get lost on the block a bit, lost track of their hitters for some reason, but we did some good playing.
"I thought Jake played very well again and Keali'i put up good numbers."
Hawaii's "swoon game" came in Game 2, where the Warriors fell behind at 12-11 and never caught up in losing 30-25. Hawaii never trailed again, jumping out to leads of 9-2 and 24-12 in Game 3, and pulling away early in Game 4 to win for the fourth time in five matches.
The Warriors outblocked UOP 10-2, with Steven Grgas in on eight. Hawaii also had the edge in aces, 6-1, with Clar coming up with two.
Pekka Seppanen and Jason Borchin each had 22 kills for the Tigers. Jeff Hendershot added 11.
Note: Prior to yesterday, the Warriors had been ranked in the national poll every week since the poll's inception in 1986, a span of 340 matches.
