Rainbows earn a split against San Francisco
Hawaii's rally attempting to pull off a doubleheader sweep came up just short, but the toughness it showed in nearly doing it is exactly what coach Mike Trapasso wants from his team.
The Rainbows scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Vinnie Catricala struck out with the game-tying run on third as San Francisco earned a split of yesterday's twinbill with a 6-5 victory in front of a crowd of 1,194 at Les Murakami Stadium.
Hawaii took the first game 9-6 as Brandon Haislet went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Jeff Van Doornum added three RBIs. The Rainbows will try to take its third of four from the Dons in today's series finale at 1:05 p.m.
Despite the loss in the nightcap, Trapasso was pumped up after the game.
"I can't wait until (today), because that's really going to be our first test," he said. "This is what we're going to be going through all year now in this crazy, four-game series type format in (the WAC). On Sunday, you'll be playing for the series or the split most of the time, and we'll see how we come out and compete."
San Francisco senior Alex Baugh kept the Rainbows offense quiet in the second game, allowing just two hits in the first six innings. The Rainbows finally put two on the board in the seventh and nearly sent the game into extras with a furious rally in the ninth.
"People in the park might think we were just cashing it in," Trapasso said. "We were battling that whole (second) game. Baugh was good. It's not like we were giving up at-bats. He was doing what he was supposed to do, but we made it interesting in the end."
The Rainbows did exactly that, as a single by Kevin Macdonald and a double by Van Doornum chased Baugh, who threw 117 pitches. Joe Oropeza came in and gave up an RBI groundout and a sacrifice fly to make it 6-4, but had the bases empty with two outs. Matt Roquemore worked an eight-pitch walk and pinch hitter Derek DuPree battled back from a 1-2 hole for another base on balls. Jon Hee fell into a 0-2 hole before ripping an RBI single to right before Catricala's strikeout ended the game with DuPree standing on third.
"I've told our guys from day one in the fall to just go out and compete," Trapasso said. "It ain't about winning and losing if you compete every pitch until the game is over. Most of the time, if we do that and with the young talent we have in particular, we're gong to win."
The Rainbows put a hurting on Dons starter Evan Fredrickson in the opener. All eight batters Fredrickson faced reached base as he didn't record an out. Van Doornum and Hee had two-run singles as Hawaii took advantage of four walks, a hit batter and an error to put up seven runs in the first inning.
That was more than enough cushion for starter Jared Alexander, who put together a second straight dominant outing. Alexander's ERA remained at zero for the season, as he didn't allow an earned run or a walk in 6 2/3 innings to improve to 2-0 on the season.
"(Getting that lead) makes my job a lot easier," Alexander said. "It's just a matter of throwing strikes and trying to save our pitching for the rest of the weekend."
Hawaii led 9-2 in the ninth. San Francisco made it interesting, with the first three Dons hitters singling. After a sacrifice fly by Joey Railey made it 9-3, Joey Parsons walked three batters in a row to plate two more Dons runs. Jayson Kramer replaced Parsons with the bases loaded and gave up a run on a fielder's choice before striking out Connor Bernatz to end the game and earn the save.
