After spending opening weekend in hiding, Hawaii's bats came alive in big way in last night's series opener against San Francisco.

Senior Brandon Haislet went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs and the Rainbows' offense pounded out 17 hits in a 10-4 victory over the Dons in front of a Les Murakami Stadium crowd of 1,323.

Landon Hernandez added a titanic solo homer over the 365-foot sign in left-center in the eighth as Hawaii scored in all but one inning.

"That's how you play the game," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. "We won't get 17 hits on a regular basis, but we can go out and compete and have better approaches."

The Rainbows (3-1) played a lackluster series against Hawaii-Hilo last weekend, but put together their best performance of the young season last night in handing the Dons (0-1) a loss in their season opener.

Evan Zimny went 4-for-4 with two RBI while hitting eighth in the order. Eight of the nine starters had at least one hit and scored at least one run.

"We struggled a little bit last weekend, but definitely got it going tonight," Zimny said. "We got a lot more aggressive with the bats."

Junior Matt Daly went six innings and gave up just two hits while striking out eight to pick up his first win of the season. He allowed three of his four runs in a 34-pitch second inning in which he walked three batters.

"We're still giving up way too many freebies," Trapasso said. "It's going to cost us if we continue to walk guys, but the one thing we know about Daly is that he's going to battle."

Freshman Josh Slaats pitched three scoreless innings in relief and allowed just two hits in picking up the save.

Hawaii jumped on USF starter Mitchell Bialosky early with two runs in the first inning. Jon Hee led off with a double and scored on a Derek DuPree single. Haislet followed with a double to left center and DuPree added the second run two batters later on an RBI groundout by Jeffrey Van Doornum.

The Dons bounced back to get three runs in the second inning off the bat of Bobby Ethel, who cleared the bases with a two-out triple that just fell under the diving attempt of Zimny in right.

The Rainbows evened the score at three in the bottom of the inning as DuPree knocked in Zimny, who doubled with one out, on a sacrifice fly.

Zimny put the Rainbows up a run in the third, driving in Kevin Macdonald with a two-out single to center before being tagged out trying to stretch the hit into a double.

San Francisco tied it at 4-4 with a run in the fifth without getting a hit. Joey Railey drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on an error by Macdonald that allowed Tavo Hall to reach base. Railey scored on a wild pitch, one of two in the inning by Daly, who came back to strike out the last two batters.

The Rainbows regained the lead for the third time as Van Doornum scored on a groundout after leading off the fifth with a double. Reliever Alex Kalogrides replaced Bialosky and threw eight consecutive balls before being replaced by Garrett Luippold.

Luippold walked Hee to load the bases, but DuPree's grounder bounced off Luippold directly to third baseman Derek Poppert, who threw him out at first to end the inning.

Hawaii poured it on with three more runs in the sixth. Haislet led off with a ground-rule double to right.

Vinnie Catricala drew a walk and Macdonald followed two batters later with a two-run triple down the right-field line. Zimny added an RBI single up the middle to score Macdonald with two outs to make it 8-4.

"That game was a dogfight most of the way," Trapasso said. "Until we put up that three-spot, we're sitting there in a tight game."

Hawaii tacked on another run in the seventh on an RBI double by Catricala that scored Haislet.

The four-game series continues today with a doubleheader beginning at 1:05 p.m.
