BOYS DIVISION I -- MCKINLEY BRACKET
KS-Hawaii KOs Kalaheo
Kamehameha-Hawaii senior Kealoha Kramer put Kalaheo's state championship hopes on ice with some cold-blooded, last-minute free-throw shooting.
Kramer snapped a 1-for-6 drought from the charity stripe for the Warriors by nailing four in a row in the final 30 seconds as Kamehameha-Hawaii held on to knock off Kalaheo 55-49 yesterday in the first round of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships yesterday at McKinley.
The Warriors (13-2) advanced to a quarterfinal matchup with No. 4 seed Kamehameha-Maui tonight at 6 behind 19 points from Hogan Rosehill and Kramer's ability to knock down key free throws in the final seconds.
"To be honest with you, I wasn't nervous at all," Kramer said. "I was confident. I've been here before and I just had to step it up."
Isaiah Kekaualua's fourth 3-pointer of the game gave the Warriors a 50-45 lead with less than 2 minutes remaining. Taylor Jay's layup pulled Kalaheo (14-2) within three, and it had three different chances to tie the game as the Warriors missed five free throws in a row.
Kalaheo closed to within two with 39 seconds remaining, but the Mustangs made the mistake of fouling Kramer twice at the end, as he put the game away.
Moanalua 65, Campbell 43
Stevie Austin scored a game-high 25 points as Na Menehune dominated the Sabers to advance to play No. 1 seed.
Michael Makinano led Campbell with 11.
