HMSA gives Big Isle Mobile Care $100,000

The Hawaii Medical Service Association donated $100,000 to the Mobile Care Health Project in West Hawaii on the Big Island, assisting the van-based mobile dental care agency to remain open until the end of the year. The donation is on top of HMSA's $50,000 annual gift.

The Japan Foundation for the Promotion of Astronomy and the Hilo-based Subaru Telescope donated $8,700 (1 million yen) to the University of Hawaii-Hilo.

The contribution is intended to help with International Education Week Nov. 17-21, which will include lectures and "talk-story" sessions on astronomy.

The Atherton Family Foundation awarded $500,000 to Catholic Charities Hawaii to build an integrated campus and permanent facility in Makiki to better serve needy residents of all faiths.

Paepae o He'eia, a nonprofit based at He'eia Fishpond in Windward Oahu, received $65,250 from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to support its community efforts to refurbish the fishpond's sea wall.

Kumu Kahua Theatre received $25,000 from the estate of the late Roger Long, an actor/director and University of Hawaii professor.
