Hawaii State Art Museum showcases the top talents among the state's students
It's a heady time for the state's finest young artists, who were picked to show their work in the "45th Annual Hawaii Region of the Scholastic Art Awards 2008" exhibit. Some 200 students from public and private middle and high schools in Hawaii can see their work up on the gallery walls of the Hawaii State Art Museum's Ewa Gallery. It's just a stone's throw away from "all the masters," said Pete Britos, the museum's director.
"They're in a premier gallery along with the likes of Tadashi Sato, Madge Tennent, Satoru Abe and Jean Charlot," he said, rattling off names of legendary local artists. "It's an anchoring of the past with a vision of the future."
The annual exhibit is part of a national program; exceptional pieces were awarded Gold and Silver Keys, which are recognized regionally, while the five best of those works were nominated for the American Vision Award. Those five nominees will represent Hawaii in a national competition in New York. Gold Key winners will enter their own competition nationally.

Locally, it's the inaugural year for the Tadashi Sato Living Art Scholarship, which recognizes painting students whose works reflect Sato's philosophy that emotional and spiritual essence flows from the artist to his piece of art, transforming the object into a living work of art. Tabitha Taraya, a senior at Leilehua High School, and Amanda Bowers, a senior at Baldwin High School on Maui, each received a $500 scholarship for their paintings. Both awardees have been active in art during their entire high school careers.
The "Scholastic Art Awards" show runs through April 4. The Hawaii State Art Museum is located at 250 S. Hotel St. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Call 586-0900.
