Stern named HPU's choral music director
Hawaii Pacific University selected
Matthew Kala'i Stern as its director of choral music, replacing
Susan McCreary Duprey. Stern served as interim director of the HPU International Vocal Ensemble in 2006. He previously directed the Honolulu Boy Choir, served as a school musical director and won multiple Na Hoku Hanohano Awards for his work with the group 'Ale'a.
Stern will join Dr. Teresa McCreary, HPU director of instrumental music, this summer to lead the orchestra and International Vocal Ensemble on a tour to Beijing and Zian, China.
Twelve University of Hawaii-Manoa students were awarded the John Young Scholarship in the Arts.
Graduate students who won $6,000 were Kuang-Hung Chen of Taiwan, who is studying philosophy; Sammie Choy of Honolulu, theater; Michelle Jones of Palolo, sculpture/glass; Heejin Kang of South Korea, piano performance; Lian Litvin of Israel, fine arts; Gary Liu of Honolulu, Asian art history; Chadwick Pang of Honolulu, ethnomusicology; and Andrea Spolti of Italy, piano performance.
Undergraduates who were awarded $3,000: Brooke Jones of Mililani, English; Jennifer Montgomery of Denver, printmaking/painting; Dallas Nagata of Kula, Maui, studio art; and Colin Ota of Kaneohe, fine arts.
