On The Scene
"NEW TRADITIONALISTS" HONORED: Napua Greig, left, went backstage at intermission to congratulate Aaron Sala, Robert Cazimero and Snowbird Bento at Sala's "New Traditionalists" concert Friday at Hawaii Theatre. Sala presided over a beautiful evening of traditional and neo-traditional Hawaiian music that included a newly written mele ku'e (song of resistance), "Ehuehu mai nei 'o Manoa." Sala told the crowd that this was the first time that his father, Samoan chief Sala Mamea, had seen him perform onstage, and added that he remembered Greig from their days at Kamehameha when she was single "and everybody knew her as Jay Nakasone."
Grammy Award finalist Raiatea Helm could have been in L.A. for the weekend but decided to skip a second trip to the ceremony and enjoy the "New Traditionalists" show with her stylist, Ralph Malani of Aveda Ala Moana, instead.
OSCAR WINNERS IN THE HOUSE: "Hot 93.9" deejays Big Koa, left, and K-Smooth, far right, chilled with Project Pat (in white) and Academy Award winners Three 6 Mafia -- Juicy J and DJ Paul -- after a special show Friday in the Roadrunner Music Hall at Clear Channel studios in Iwilei. The winners of the 2006 Oscar for best song ("It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp") gave a preview of their next album while their reality show's film crew captured the action.
PRO BOWL MADNESS: Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens had his own ultraprivate VIP area around a corner and out of sight of fans in the regular VIP area Friday night at Aaron's, but Yvette Nii (Miss Ko Olina 2008), left, and Alana Paulo-Tamashiro (Miss Windward 2008) were able to persuade his bodyguards to let them say hello. Aaron's was jammed wall to wall with football fans.
A "PRINCESS" CELEBRATES: Philana Bouvier, left, Sheila-Anne Hodges, Cyrina Hadad and Millie Hodges posed pretending to be fashion models as they celebrated Sheila-Anne's birthday Saturday with wine and pupus at Vino. Bouvier helped plan the event, but Hadad gets credit for the birthday girl's miniature tiara and "Birthday Princess" sash.
