Students Gates, Kwok are state delegates
U.S. Sens. Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka have appointed
Jonathan Gates and
Alexia Kwok as Hawaii's delegates to the 46th Annual United States Senate Youth Program next month in Washington, D.C.
Gates of Kaimuki High School is vice-president of the Honolulu District Student Council and has held many leadership positions. Kwok is student body president at McKinley High School and president of the Honolulu District Student Council.
Alternates are Kevin Donahue of Saint Louis School, and Trinity Nguyen of Aiea High School.
A team from
Punahou School took first place at the Hawaii Regional Science Bowl Jan. 26, winning an all-expenses paid trip to Chevy Chase, Md., to represent Hawaii at the U.S. Department of Energy 2008 National Science Bowl in May.
The team, coached by Mike Gearen, includes seniors Randy Wong, Thomas Young, Rentaro Matsukata, junior Allison Chen, and sophomore Eric Liaw.
Punahou has won the regional Science Bowl five times after answering rapid-fire questions on biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, earth science, general science and math.
